Igniting student curiosity in STEM

About Camp BLAST!

Camp BLAST! is a collaborative effort among California State University Bakersfield and Kern County school districts to provide a uniquely engaging summer program to underrepresented student populations in STEM. Camp BLAST! has a two-fold mission:

1. To ignite elementary student curiosity in the field of STEM, and
2. Expose pre-service teachers to engaging hands-on STEM curriculum and expand their field experience

Camp BLAST! originated as a NASA funded program, Summer of Innovation. CSU Bakersfield brought the Summer of Innovation program to Lamont Elementary School District in 2010 and while NASA funding did not persist both groups saw great value in the program and continued the camp with alternative funding.

Today, camp BLAST! is offered to students at Buttonwillow Union School District, Lamont School District, and Semitropic Elementary School District. Over 550 students ranging from 4th-7th grade, participate each year in the STEM program.
